Pre-Departure Guidelines
Pre-Departure Guidelines
Once you’ve accepted your offer, it’s time to prepare for your journey to Melbourne. Follow these steps to ensure a smooth transition to your new life in Australia:
- Obtain Your Passport and Visa
Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the expiry of your student visa. Apply for your Australian Student Visa (subclass 500) and ensure all necessary documents for travel are prepared. - Book Flights, Travel Insurance, and Collect Your Ticket
Once your visa is approved, book your flight to Melbourne as soon as possible. We recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance to cover any emergencies, health issues, or travel disruptions. - Arrange Airport Pickup and Accommodation
Organize airport pickup either through an agency or your school’s International Services office. Ensure you have confirmed your accommodation before you depart, whether temporary or long-term. - Familiarize Yourself with Customs Regulations
Australia’s customs and quarantine regulations are very strict. Review the guidelines to see what items are allowed and prohibited when entering the country: Australian Border Force. - Undergo Medical Check-Ups
Get any required medical check-ups before departing. If you are bringing prescribed medications, make sure they are allowed in Australia and bring the necessary documentation such as prescriptions and doctor’s letters. - Essential Documents to Bring
Pack the following important documents in your carry-on:
* Passport with your student visa
* Offer letter from your education provider
* Course acceptance agreement
* Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE)
* International driver’s license (if you have one)
* Birth certificate or national ID card
* Accommodation confirmation details
* Emergency contact information (relatives, friends, and embassy details) - Bring Sufficient Funds
Ensure you carry enough funds or have access to AU$2,500–AU$3,500 via credit card or bank drafts to cover initial expenses like accommodation, food, and transport for your first week in Melbourne.
Booking Your Flight
Once you receive your student visa, book your flight to Melbourne without delay. Plan to arrive early, preferably one or two weeks before enrolment, giving yourself time to settle in, organize accommodation, and manage finances.
Late enrolment may limit your choice of class times and could result in missing essential orientation events. If you cannot arrive by the commencement date mentioned in your offer letter, contact your education provider immediately to seek permission for late arrival.
What to Pack
The essentials
Melbourne has a reputation for experiencing four seasons in one day, so pack a flexible wardrobe suitable for temperatures ranging from 10°C to 40°C. Most students dress casually, so bring clothes such as jeans, T-shirts, sweaters, and comfortable shoes.
For electronics, bring your laptop, phone chargers, and an adaptor for Australian sockets. Australia uses 220-240 volts AC with three-pinned plugs. Adaptors can be purchased locally for around AU$30–AU$50.
What Not to Pack
Avoid bringing prohibited items such as:
- Animal or plant products (e.g., dried meats, seafood, seeds, herbs)
- Foodstuffs restricted by quarantine laws
- Drugs, guns, and weapons which are strictly prohibited and can result in severe penalties
Never carry luggage or items on behalf of others, as they may contain restricted or illegal goods for which you will be held responsible.
Australian Customs and Quarantine Regulations
Australia has stringent customs and quarantine regulations. Many items, such as food, plant materials, and animal products, are not allowed. If unsure, declare items at customs or check the guidelines here: Can you bring it in?.
Bringing prohibited substances such as illicit drugs, firearms, and pets into Australia is illegal and can result in severe consequences.
